Lambeth College comprised three campuses, Clapham, Vauxhall and Brixton, though now it is part of the London South Bank University Group.
The College provides high quality, practical and technical qualifications for 16-19 year olds to give them a clear route into employment.
The new sixth form centre at Clapham for Lambeth College has opened to staff and students. The building includes performance space, flexible teaching studios, a library, and an open breakout area which acts as a visual buffer dividing the learning space and the performing arts base.
Designed to feel open and accessible with a reinforced social identity and very strong sense of place, the centre is a microcosm of the real world with design studios, classrooms and meeting/common rooms.
Planning permission was also obtained for the complete redevelopment of the College’s Brixton campus to provide 11,500sqm of floorspace for a Design and Technology College.
This comprised a glazed entrance (with views to a landscaped courtyard and listed fountain), with the main hub building being three storeys in height providing classrooms, teaching space and administrative rooms, and a technology hall, 14.5m in height, to the side.
In addition to the above major developments, some original approaches, were used to achieve the College’s development aspirations, whilst avoiding the need to apply for planning permission, .
These included demonstrating that additional building works did not constitute development (section 55 of the Town and Country Planning Act) and demonstrating that other uses were incidental to the main educational use of the buildings.
Internally to the building, the college established training facilities for their practical courses, such as floristry, catering, and hair and beauty.
These enabled the students to gain experience amongst the community, providing a restaurant, florist and salon directly serving the public.
